Introduction / History

The Keralamuthali Christians are a small community within the broader Mudaliar caste, historically found in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The term "Muthali" or "Mudali" is a Tamil honorific meaning "first" or "head," often associated with leadership or landownership.Keralamuthalis migrated to Kerala in the late 17th century, primarily for agriculture, coconut oil extraction, and military service as fighters and spies. During the British colonial era, some families converted to Christianity, forming a distinct Christian subgroup while retaining aspects of their Mudaliar identity.They are part of a micro-minority caste and are classified as socially and educationally backward by state governments.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Their traditional occupations include weaving, agriculture, and manual labor, though many have transitioned into modern professions. Intermarriage with other communities, such as Nairs and Chakravars, is common, especially among those who have converted to Christianity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Keralamuthali Christians are 100% Christian, though the evangelical presence is unknown. Their faith journey began during the British period, and they have since integrated into Kerala’s Christian culture. While they are fully Christian, some cultural remnants of Hindu traditions—such as reverence for Lord Muruga/Subramanya—may still influence their worldview.

What Are Their Needs?

Despite their Christian identity, Keralamuthali Christians face challenges such as economic hardship and educational barriers. They have been socially excluded because of their caste identity.They would benefit from discipleship training, vocational training, and community development programs.
